Summer concerts

Is there anything better than a concert at Pine Knob? Warm summer nights in July, cold beer and a blanket. I prefer to sit on the lawn—that’s where the fun is.

I never made it there last summer, but hopefully I’ll see a few this year. Here’s what’s on my list:

  • Chickenfoot (????) This is a must-see for me. Not sure if/when/where they are coming to town, but I’m assuming this super group of Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Chad Smith will make a stop here.
  • Def Leppard and Poison (July 24) I try to never miss the annual Poison show.

  • Dave Matthews Band (July 28)  I’ve never seen this guy play and I’m not really a huge fan, but I recognize and like a lot of his music. I’d enjoy it as long as I don’t sit anywhere near his tour bus.
  • Jimmy Buffett (August 13) It’s probably been a good 10 years since I’ve seen Buffett live. I’ve never been quick enough to get tickets and for some reason he never plans a second show. There were a few years in that span where he didn’t even come to Detroit at all. Somehow I need to get tickets for this one.
  • Motley Crue (August 15) One of the best rock shows I ever saw was on this band’s Dr. Feelgood tour. I saw them a few years back and they still rocked. Their new music is actually outstanding. Can they still put on a great show?
  • AC/DC (August 16 at the Palace) I’ve never seen these guys, but they are one of the best. Probably should see them before it’s too late.
  • Kenny Chesney (August 22) More island music than country. It’s at Ford Field, I’d rather watch this show from a tiki bar on the beach.
  • Aerosmith (September 16 at the Palace) Aerosmith is one of my favorite bands. I wish they’d go on a Classic Aerosmith tour where they only played the old stuff. Probably not going to happen. I saw them about 8-9 years ago with KISS and both bands disappointed. They didn’t get any younger since then, but their ticket prices got higher.
