AAA says people traveling 50 miles or more will drop nearly 1 percent
– This is news????? ONE WHOLE PERCENT?? This is the type of ridiculous media coverage that, unfortunately, turns things into reality. Too many Americans take what they read from “reliable” sources and use it to guide their lifestyle choices.
What about the fact that gas is approximately...

What does the mainstream media do now?
“This is the beginning of the end,” as wrestling commentator Gorilla Monsoon used to say. The Internet has forever changed the way we consume news and with the announcement of Barack Obama’s running mate, we’re witnessing the beginning of the end for the mainstream media.
Everyone who signed up for Obama’s text messaging campaign was the first to hear his decision to...
Blogging and branding →
A couple of months ago I heard Seth Goldman, founder of Honest Tea, speak at the FUSE Design Conference in New York. At the time, I wrote a post questioning how his company could carry on its…

I saw this over at Brand New and took this survey developed by the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Here are my results: I wonder why they felt it was necessary to…

Is August the new December?
For some reason this year it seems like more and more people are taking extended vacations that last the entire month of August. Sort of a European approach to work.
Has anyone else noticed this? I see more blogging about it and I hear about it from clients and their businesses.
I like what Seth Godin has to say about this slower time of year in this blog post. As a result, I’ve pushed up...

Getting things done...
I make a long list of things to do before the start of each week—business and personal. It’s a good opportunity to get things out of my head and on to my notebook. (I can’t do lists/tasks on my iphone, just doesn’t seem to work for me)
The problem with these lists is 1) they’re too long and 2) I keep repeating a lot of the same things every week.
Then I saw this...

Is Coldplay The New Journey?
When I was in high school we never really admitted to listening to Journey. Today I think the same can be said of Coldplay. Posted with LifeCast

Cold calling...
These should be the cold calling laws:
You must know the name of the person you are trying to reach.
You may only make two cold calls a day.
You must not read from a script.
Is cold calling still effective in 2008 even if the caller doesn’t follow the above rules? Here’s what’s funny. I hang up on cold callers that don’t follow “my” rules. What’s...

Who the hell is talking about platooning? Gary Sheffield hasn’t been...
– Jim Leyland, in a pretty funny Detroit News article in response to Sheffield bitching about his playing time. Personally, I think Leyland rests guys too much with the exception of Sheffield who I think plays too much.

Suburban sprawl of the dead
No kidding. The Detroit News has an interesting and somewhat disturbing feature on family members moving their dead family from Detroit cemetaries into those in the suburbs. A couple thoughts I had:
if it’s indeed racially motivated as the article mentions, do these people realize that our skin decomposes pretty quickly. We’re neither white, black, red, yellow or green (well, maybe...

I’ve used the analogy before of a logo being like a magazine cover. It’s the first thing people see and how it stands on the magazine rack can oftentimes determine its success. Today I read that …

Is it real or is it tape-delayed?
That’s often been the question I’ve had with Olympic coverage. You never really know what you’re watching happening now or earlier. Fortunately, with the imminent convergence of TV and Internet it should get a little better. But, for now, it’s still painfully obvious that the TV rights-holder, NBC, is living in the past.
At 8:00 last night NBC finally got around to showing...
Branding the uniform, not the player →
The saying goes, “you root for the uniform.” That’s how most sports fans get behind their team in an era of free agency and big contracts. It’s usually a geographical association that…
