Oh no...
Last year when Justin Verlander threw his no-hitter I was supposed to be at that game. I used to do the play-by-play for MLB.com and would have done that game but I was out of town for a conference. So today, when I tune in and hear that Verlander is into the fourth inning without allowing a hit, I wonder am I going to miss a second Verlander no-hitter???? Verlander ended up giving up some hits...

A tale of the grocery store. Why do some do well and others fail? It’s as simple as being memorable and having a well-defined brand. Costco and Walmart are memorable in the fact that they…
Kalamazoo
What is it with this city? It seems like this west Michigan town is commonly referred to in articles and stories that I read. K-Zoo just keeps popping up. Why does it seem to have some strange pop following?
When will tipping reach its tipping point?
I was somewhat surprised to read this. Let me say, I’ve never tipped at a Starbucks or anywhere I have to carry my food from counter to table and then dispose of my own trash. You don’t tip at McDonalds so why the hell would you tip at Starbucks? As a former restaurant owner, I know tips are a crazy aspect of the business. Like many things these days, people think they’re...
Bo knows hockey!
Just watching a special on CNBC about Nike. I loved those Bo knows… commercials. Shot of Bo Jackson hitting a homerun in his Royals uniform. Kirk Gibson saying “Bo knows baseball. Bo playing basketball. Michael Jordan declaring, “Bo knows basketball.” Then finally a shot of Bo getting driven along the boards as a Los Angeles King and struggling to get to the puck. Wayne...

A great office idea
About a year and a half ago we were looking to purchase an office building that was formerly a heating and cooling company. It was a pretty rustic looking place and the open architecture presented all kinds of ideas about how we could set up shop. After seeing what this architecture firm in Atlanta did, I’m inspired to get back on this path of finding something like this.
Mark Cuban
A while ago there was talk that Mark Cuban was interested in buying the Chicago Cubs. Rumor had it that the old boys club of baseball owners turned their noses up to him. Baseball could use an owner like this. So could hockey. I enjoy when he blogs about the Mavericks—a very interesting perspective that you just can’t get anywhere else.
Madonna
Why is Madonna in the rock and roll hall of fame? It would be like electing Michael Jordan to the baseball hall.
Darren McCarty
I hope it turns out to be more than just a publicity stunt to fill seats. Hey, if Joe Kocur can make the jump back to the NHL after playing in the beer leagues, here’s hoping McCarty can too.
Third-rate sports leagues never work
News that the All American Football League may have to scrap its season doesn’t surprise me at all. It just doesn’t work. The NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and NCAA basketball and football have a lock on any type of competition. Enough already.
Wait a minute...
Considering how wrong meteorologists are I think I’m going to lean towards believing Al Gore’s take on global warming rather than John Coleman’s—the guy who gave us the notoriously always wrong, Weather Channel.
The Greatest Scam in History?
John Coleman, the grumpy old founder of the Weather Channel, was on Fox News yesterday morning saying how global warming is just a big scam orchestrated by those with political agendas and apparently no better time on their hands. Personally, I’m standing somewhere in between Al Gore and Coleman. Having not studied it in great depth like these two individuals and only gathering my...
Either play the whole season or retire
I think it’s sort of ridiculous that you have players who are reaching the end of their careers squeezing every last opportunity to extend them by swooping in mid- to late-season and joining a team. Roger Clemens, Teemu Selanne, Scott Niedermayer and Peter Forsberg—if you can’t play an entire season, you should really consider retiring. Just my thoughts. Tomorrow they will probably be...

Not the Lions!...ugh
Over the weekend the Lions signed Buffalo TE, Michael Gaines. This must have been Gaines’ reaction when his agent told him this was the best offer. This photo was on the Detroit Free Press website. I heard them talking about it on 97.1 this morning.

Did you know that Thomas Edison founded General Electric? I was having a conversation the other day and my friend pointed out “I didn’t know Edison started GE.” I paused for a moment and thought…
Max's first organized sport!
Today was a huge day for me and my oldest son Max! We signed him up for an eight week soccer clinic called SoccerTots. I am so excited for him and I could tell he’s pretty excited about it too. We took him to watch the kids play and make sure this was something that he wanted to do. I think right now he’s actually more excited about the shirt he’s going to get, but I’m sure...
